Day 14: Confidence in Your Calling

Embracing your role as an ambassador of God’s Kingdom

"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light."

– 1 Peter 2:9(NIV)

Reflection

For a brief period in Uni, I was part of a dance theatre group called Alien Nation, and this scripture was our anchor. At first, I knew it as a childhood song, but hearing it recited at every performance/rehearsal began to give it new depth. The name Alien Nation symbolized something profound—that as believers, we are not of this world. Yet, while we are not of the world, we are still here, tasked with representing the Kingdom of God to the world around us.

As citizens of God’s Kingdom, we live under its constitution—the Bible. Our lives are meant to reflect this divine standard. But how often do we truly embrace this identity? How well do we live out our calling as ambassadors of God’s Kingdom?

It’s important to first establish that our identity as God’s chosen people isn’t something we’ve earned. It is rooted in God’s love and grace, making it unshakable. So, even when doubts creep in—when we feel unworthy or inadequate—we can rest in the truth that God called us not because of our perfection, but because of His perfect plan. When we falter or feel we’re not representing Him well enough, His patience and grace are there to uphold us. All He asks is that we remain connected to Him.

Matthew 5:14–16 puts it beautifully:

"You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."

Our role as God’s representatives is to glorify Him. Like a mirror reflects the image of whoever stands before it, we are called to reflect God’s light. In the darkness that often surrounds this world, we shine by the way we live—not just through ministry or church activities, but in the everyday rhythms of our lives.

Have you ever had someone say to you, “And you call yourself a Christian,” after you’ve made a mistake. This statement might come across as judgmental or harsh but if we take a moment to think about it, it’s also a reminder of the standards we’re called to uphold as ambassadors of God’s Kingdom. When we declare our faith, we affirm our commitment to live by the constitution of our Kingdom—the Word of God.

I won’t deny that there will be times when we feel unworthy or unqualified, especially when we consider our mistakes. But the good news is God equips us for every good work. It’s not by our strength but by His Spirit (Zechariah 4:6). However, as ambassadors, we also have responsibilities. We are filled with God’s love, and this love should overflow in how we treat others—with kindness, grace, and integrity, even when it’s difficult.

The way we live—how we speak, work, and interact with others—becomes our Kingdom Uniform. Whether at home, at work, or in traffic (wink, wink!), our lives declare God’s goodness. As representatives of God, our actions and choices can inspire others and create ripples that lead them toward His Kingdom.

Thankfully, we don’t walk this path alone. The Holy Spirit empowers us with the wisdom, strength, and boldness we need. Through His help, we can refuse to cut corners, avoid that “harmless” gossip, and stand firm in our beliefs, even when it feels uncomfortable. Remember, while we ultimately live for an audience of One, others are watching. Our faithfulness to our calling can have an eternal impact on those we encounter.

  • This week, take time to journal about how you can live out your calling as God’s ambassador.

  • Reflect on areas where you can better shine His light—whether in your words, your actions, or your attitude.

Lord, thank You for choosing me as Your own and calling me into Your marvelous light. Help me to walk boldly in my calling as Your ambassador. Empower me with Your Spirit to live in a way that glorifies You. Teach me to reflect Your love and truth in every aspect of my life, knowing that my actions can lead others to You. Strengthen me to stand firm in my faith and to trust that You are with me every step of the way. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
